Winter Tour FAQs

Gulmarg receives heavy snowfall from December to March, with peak snow conditions typically in January and February. December and March often offer a good balance of snow and accessibility. Early December may have fresh snow accumulation, while late March might see some melting at lower levels.

Phase 1 of the Gondola (Gulmarg to Kongdoori) usually operates in winter subject to weather conditions and visibility. Phase 2 (to Apharwat) often closes due to heavy snow and avalanche risks. Operation is weather-dependent and can be suspended unexpectedly during snowstorms or poor visibility.

Essential winter gear: thermal innerwear, fleece layers, heavy down jacket, waterproof outer layer, woolen socks, snow boots with good grip, waterproof gloves, warm cap/beanie, scarf/balaclava. Also pack moisturizer, lip balm, sunglasses (snow glare), and hand warmers if susceptible to cold.

Yes, Shikara rides operate in winter unless Dal Lake is completely frozen over (rare occurrence). During colder days, operators provide blankets and sometimes heated coverings. Morning rides may be limited due to fog. Safety is always prioritized, and rides are cancelled if conditions are unsafe.

Yes, Sonamarg is often inaccessible from December to March due to heavy snowfall on the highway. The road may be partially cleared for limited access, but full access to the meadow is rare. We monitor conditions and have alternative Srinagar winter experiences planned in case of closure.

With proper preparation, yes. We select hotels with reliable heating, plan shorter sightseeing days, and maintain flexible itineraries. However, those with respiratory issues or mobility challenges should consult doctors. We recommend travel insurance and carrying necessary medications.

Most tourist hotels in Kashmir provide room heaters (radiators or blowers), electric blankets, and hot water bags on request. Many have central heating or individual AC units with heating. Houseboats use bukharis (traditional wood heaters) and electric heaters. We confirm heating arrangements before booking.

Main highways (Srinagar-Gulmarg, Srinagar-Pahalgam) are generally maintained with snow clearance. However, delays can occur during/after fresh snowfall. Mountain roads may require snow chains (available for rent). We use experienced local drivers familiar with winter driving and maintain communication about road status.

5.0Perfect Winter Wonderland Experience!

Our January winter tour was magical! Gulmarg was a snowy paradise - our kids loved sledging. Hotels were properly heated which was our main concern. The team handled a snowfall delay professionally, adjusting our itinerary smoothly. The winter Shikara ride with blankets was surprisingly cosy. Highly recommend for winter travellers!

4.5Authentic Winter Experience!

Visited in February for our winter getaway. The Mughal gardens had a beautiful winter charm with light snow. Pahalgam was serene - we enjoyed peaceful walks along partially frozen streams. Road to Sonamarg was closed but the team had excellent Srinagar alternatives. Hotels were warm, food was comforting. Driver was skilled on snowy roads.
